University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center
Arizona Project WET
Arizona Project WET, hosted by the University of Arizona's Water Resources Research Center, is the state's official Project WET USA program and, as a state program of Arizona Cooperative Extension, works in multiple Arizona counties. Offerings include the fourth-grade Arizona Water Festival, The Nature of Groundwater classroom program, and teacher academies that build content knowledge in Arizona-specific water topics such as groundwater-surface water connections.
What you will find there
- Arizona Water Festival, a free hands-on water-cycle event for fourth-grade classes
- The Nature of Groundwater classroom program on surface-water and groundwater connections in local watersheds
- Water Scene Investigation, an inquiry unit where students act as water detectives
- Teacher Academies offering STEM-focused professional development on Arizona water topics
- Curriculum unit guides covering the Arizona water cycle and regional watersheds
Our take
Because the program is delivered locally in multiple counties, it reaches Arizona-specific topics, like the connection between groundwater and surface water in a desert state, that national materials rarely cover. Offerings, contacts, and scheduling differ by region, so a teacher should reach out to the AZ Project WET team about their county rather than assuming one set of dates applies statewide.
