GLOBE Program — Hydrosphere Protocols
GLOBE's hydrosphere protocols are scientist-developed field procedures for measuring alkalinity, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, macroinvertebrates, nitrates, pH, salinity, temperature, and transparency in a local stream, river, lake, or coastal water body. Student measurements are entered into an international research database, which gives a class a real role in a worldwide science effort.
Visit GLOBE Program — Hydrosphere Protocols ↗
What you will find there
- Ten measurement protocols, from water temperature and pH to macroinvertebrate surveys and a mosquito-habitat mapper
- Training modules that walk teachers through each protocol before taking students into the field
- Grade-appropriate learning activities built around each protocol
- A global data-visualization platform where student measurements join an international dataset
- Equipment guides describing what each protocol requires to run
Our take
GLOBE lets students contribute to real international research, and the protocols themselves are rigorous and teacher-tested. Free GLOBE training is required before a class can officially submit data, so build that step into your planning timeline.
