Worksheet Grade 1 Math
Quarry Lane's Storm Drain Crew: A Grade 1 Clock Worksheet
Twelve grade 1 items where students read and write hour and half-hour times from the log a street crew keeps while checking storm drains during a rainstorm.
Objectives
- Students will write hour and half-hour times shown by clock hands.
- Students will find the time a half hour or one hour after a given time.
- Students will tell which of two times comes first.
Vocabulary
- Storm drain
- A storm drain is the grate at the edge of a street that swallows rainwater and sends it through pipes to the nearest creek or river. That water is usually not treated, so only rain belongs down the drain.
Also: hour, half hour, o'clock, hour hand
Teacher overview
Quarry Lane is a made-up town whose street crew drives from grate to grate during heavy rain, pulling branches and leaves off the storm drains so water keeps running off the road instead of pooling at the curb. The crew writes down the time of every stop, because a supervisor later needs to know which drain was cleared first. That log is the setting for all twelve items. The misconception this worksheet targets is the belief that the hour hand jumps straight from one number to the next, which leads students to name a half-hour time by the number the hand sits closest to rather than the number it has already passed, so that a hand between the 9 and the 10 gets read as ten thirty. Items 2 and 3 sit next to each other so the class can compare where the hour hand sits at an hour and at a half hour.
Student Worksheet
The crew checks storm drains in the rain. They write the time of each stop.
- The crew checked Drain 1 at 8:00. Write that time in words.
- On the clock the hour hand is halfway between 9 and 10. The minute hand points to 6. What time is it?
- On the clock the hour hand points to 10. The minute hand points to 12. What time is it?
- The crew checked Drain 2 at 9:30. They checked Drain 3 a half hour later. What time was that?
- The crew checked Drain 3 at 10:00. They checked Drain 4 one hour later. What time was that?
- Which time comes first, 8:30 or 9:00?
- The crew left at 11:30. What number does the minute hand point to at 11:30?
- The crew checked a drain at seven o'clock. Write that time with numbers.
- The rain stopped at 2:30. Is 2:30 an hour time or a half-hour time?
- The crew checked a drain at 1:00. They checked the next one a half hour later. What time was that?
- The crew met at 12:30. They drove away a half hour later. What time did they drive away?
- A clock shows 3:00. What number does the hour hand point to?

Answer Key
- Answer: eight o'clock. A time written 8:00 is read as eight o'clock.
- Answer: 9:30. The minute hand on the 6 means half past, and the hour hand has passed 9 but not reached 10, so the hour is 9.
- Answer: 10:00. The minute hand on the 12 means the hour is exact, and the hour hand points right at 10.
- Answer: 10:00. A half hour after 9:30 is 10:00.
- Answer: 11:00. One hour after 10:00 is 11:00.
- Answer: 8:30. Eight thirty happens before nine o'clock, because 8 comes before 9.
- Answer: 6. At any half-hour time the minute hand points to the 6.
- Answer: 7:00. Seven o'clock is written 7:00.
- Answer: a half-hour time. The 30 after the colon means half past the hour.
- Answer: 1:30. A half hour after 1:00 is 1:30.
- Answer: 1:00. A half hour after 12:30 is 1:00.
- Answer: 3. At an exact hour the hour hand points straight at that number.
Differentiation
Support
Give these students a small paper clock with movable hands and let them build every time before writing it, and reduce the assignment to items 1 through 7. Model item 2 with them by turning the hands slowly from 9:00 to 9:30 so they watch the hour hand drift.
Extension
Ask these students to write the crew's full stop list in order from earliest to latest using the times in items 4, 5, 10, and 11, then to name how much time passed between the first stop and the last one.
ELL supports
Post a clock face labeled with "o'clock" at the 12 and "half past" at the 6, and point to the label each time either phrase is read aloud. Provide the frame "It is ___ o'clock" and the frame "It is half past ___" so students have a sentence for each kind of answer.
