Worksheet Grade 3 Math
Wickersham Plant's Morning Check Route: A Grade 3 Time Worksheet
A grade 3 worksheet where students find finish times, gaps, and totals for the five stops on a fictional water plant operator's morning check route.
Objectives
- Students will add a number of minutes to a start time to find a finish time.
- Students will find the number of minutes between two clock times.
- Students will add and subtract totals within 1000 taken from an operator's log.
Vocabulary
Key words: operator, check route, log, interval, shift
Teacher overview
An operator at a drinking water plant walks the same route every morning, stopping at each room to look, listen, and write down what the gauges show. This worksheet follows Rosa Villanueva through five stops at the fictional Wickersham Water Plant and asks students to work with the start times and the length of each check. The misconception the worksheet targets is the habit of subtracting clock digits as if they were plain numbers, which turns 7:15 minus 6:40 into 75 instead of 35 minutes, so several items ask students to count forward on a number line or a clock face instead.
Student Worksheet
Rosa Villanueva is an operator at the fictional Wickersham Water Plant. Every morning she walks a check route. She stops in five places. This is her list.
| Stop | Start time | Minutes the check takes |
|---|---|---|
| Pump room | 6:05 a.m. | 15 |
| Filter room | 6:25 a.m. | 20 |
| Lab bench | 6:50 a.m. | 25 |
| Tank yard | 7:20 a.m. | 10 |
| Log desk | 7:35 a.m. | 12 |
- Rosa starts the pump room check at 6:05 a.m. The check takes 15 minutes. What time does she finish?
- She starts the filter room check at 6:25 a.m. That check takes 20 minutes. What time does she finish?
- Rosa leaves the pump room at 6:20 a.m. She starts in the filter room at 6:25 a.m. How many minutes is the gap?
- The lab bench check starts at 6:50 a.m. It takes 25 minutes. What time does she finish?
- The tank yard check starts at 7:20 a.m. It takes 10 minutes. What time does she finish?
- The log desk check starts at 7:35 a.m. It takes 12 minutes. What time does she finish?
- The five checks take 15, 20, 25, 10, and 12 minutes. Add them. How many minutes in all?
- Rosa starts at 6:05 a.m. She finishes at 7:47 a.m. How many minutes is the whole route?
- The lab bench check takes 25 minutes. The tank yard check takes 10 minutes. How many more minutes is the lab bench check?
- Last week the route took 96 minutes. This week it took 102 minutes. How many more minutes was it this week?
- The plant logged 348 checks in May. It logged 285 checks in June. How many checks in all?
- Rosa writes the exact clock time next to every check. Why is that helpful to the next operator?

Answer Key
- Answer: 6:20 a.m. Count on 15 minutes from 6:05. Five minutes brings her to 6:10, and ten more brings her to 6:20.
- Answer: 6:45 a.m. Count on 20 minutes from 6:25, which is 6:35 after ten minutes and 6:45 after ten more.
- Answer: 5 minutes. From 6:20 to 6:25 is five one-minute steps on the clock.
- Answer: 7:15 a.m. From 6:50, ten minutes reaches 7:00 and fifteen more reaches 7:15, for 25 minutes in all.
- Answer: 7:30 a.m. From 7:20, counting on 10 minutes reaches 7:30.
- Answer: 7:47 a.m. From 7:35, counting on 12 minutes reaches 7:47.
- Answer: 82 minutes. 15 plus 20 is 35. 35 plus 25 is 60. 60 plus 10 is 70. 70 plus 12 is 82.
- Answer: 102 minutes. From 6:05 to 7:05 is 60 minutes. From 7:05 to 7:47 is 42 more. 60 plus 42 is 102. Watch for students who write 142 by subtracting the clock digits.
- Answer: 15 minutes. 25 minus 10 is 15.
- Answer: 6 minutes. 102 minus 96 is 6.
- Answer: 633 checks. 348 plus 285 is 633. Add 300 and 200 to get 500, then 48 and 85 to get 133, then 500 plus 133.
- Answer: The time shows when the reading was taken. Accept any answer explaining that the next operator can tell how fresh a reading is, can spot a gap where no one checked, or can match a problem to the hour it started. Answers naming the log as a record other workers depend on are also correct.
Differentiation
Support
Give these students a printed clock face with a movable minute hand, or a blank number line marked in five-minute steps, and model item 1 with them before they begin. Assign items 1 through 5 and item 9 only, and allow the finish times to be shown by drawing hands on a clock instead of writing digits.
Extension
Ask students to build a sixth stop for the fictional Wickersham route. They choose a room, a start time that does not overlap any existing check, and a length in minutes, then write the finish time and recompute the total from item 7 with the new stop included.
ELL supports
Pre-teach "operator," "check," and "gap" by walking a short check route in the classroom with three stops and a timer. Provide the sentence frames "The check starts at ___ and takes ___ minutes, so it ends at ___" and "The gap is ___ minutes." Allow item 12 to be answered orally.
