Which Call First? A Grade 1 Opinion Prompt for the Bittersweet Crew
A grade 1 opinion writing prompt where students decide which of two water crew calls should be answered first and give one reason for the choice.
Objectives
- Students will state an opinion about which water crew call should be answered first.
- Students will supply one reason for their opinion drawn from the background material.
- Students will end their writing with a closing sentence.
Vocabulary
Key words: opinion, reason, crew, leak
Teacher overview
Water crews spend a good part of every week deciding what to do first, and the choice is rarely obvious. This prompt hands first graders one of those decisions from the fictional town of Bittersweet: a broken pipe that has left three houses without water, and a steady leak at an empty ball field that is wasting water around the clock. Both answers are defensible, so the reason a student gives carries the whole piece, which is what W.1.1 asks for. Read the background aloud twice, keep the two calls posted where students can see them while they write, and resist steering the class toward either answer.
Prompt
Read aloud to the class. Read it twice.
The water crew in the town of Bittersweet has one truck today. Two calls came in at the same time. The crew can go to only one call first.
Call One. A pipe broke on Hackberry Lane. Three houses there have no water at all. The people in them cannot wash or cook.
Call Two. A pipe is leaking at the ball field. Nobody lives at the ball field. Water runs out of that pipe all day and all night. None of it gets used.
Your job. Write which call the crew should go to first. Tell one reason why. End with one sentence that finishes your idea. You may draw a picture of the crew too.
Planning Organizer
Fill in each box before you write.
| My plan | What I will write |
|---|---|
| My opinion: which call should be first? | The crew should go to ____ first. |
| My reason: why that call? | I think this because ____ . |
| My closing: how do I finish my idea? | That is why ____ . |
Say all three boxes out loud to a partner before you start writing.

Exemplar & Rubric
Exemplar response, written at grade 1 level:
I think the crew should go to Hackberry Lane first. Three houses there have no water at all. Those people cannot wash their hands or cook dinner. The leak at the ball field is bad too, and the crew can fix that one next. That is why Hackberry Lane should come first.
Rubric
| Criterion | Emerging | Developing | Proficient | Advanced |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opinion | Names a place without saying what the crew should do | States a choice but does not say it should come first | Clearly states which call the crew should answer first | States the choice and names both calls so the decision is clear |
| Reason | Gives no reason, or repeats the choice as the reason | Gives a reason that does not come from the two calls | Gives one reason drawn from the call chosen | Gives one reason and says why the other call can wait |
| Closing | Writing stops with no ending | Ends with a repeated word or a picture only | Ends with a sentence that finishes the idea | Ends with a sentence that ties back to the reason given |
| Conventions | Letters and words are hard to read | Some spaces and some capital letters | Capital letters, spaces, and end marks used most of the time | Capital letters, spaces, and end marks used throughout, with sight words spelled correctly |
Differentiation
Support (below grade level)
Give these students a two-picture strip, one of a house with a dry tap and one of a pipe running water on an empty field, and let them circle a picture before planning. Accept dictation for the reason box and offer the spoken frames "The crew should go to ____ first" and "I think this because ____" as often as needed.
Extension (above grade level)
Ask these students to write a second short paragraph saying what the crew should do about the call they did not choose, and how soon. Have them read both paragraphs aloud and underline the sentence that states their opinion.
ELL supports
Pre-teach crew, broke, leak, and first with a picture card for each, and keep the two calls posted with a picture beside each one. Accept an oral opinion in the home language followed by a scribed English sentence, and allow a labeled drawing to stand in for the closing sentence.
Extensions
Tally the class choices on chart paper and count each side, then have two students who chose differently each read their reason aloud. Send the tally and a few reasons to the local water utility with a question asking how their crews decide which call to take first, since utilities that answer school mail can describe how they set priorities on a busy day.
