Worksheet Grade 4 Math
Marden Pond Water Study: Writing Readings as Decimals
A grade 4 worksheet where students at the fictional Marden Pond write tenths and hundredths of a liter as decimals and fractions and compare the readings.
Objectives
- Students will write fractions with denominators of 10 or 100 in decimal form.
- Students will compare and order decimal readings to the tenths and hundredths.
Vocabulary
Key words: decimal, tenth, hundredth, fraction
Teacher overview
A fourth-grade class checks the water at the fictional Marden Pond. They collect pond water in tubes marked in tenths of a liter, and they read a chart marked in hundredths. This worksheet uses those readings to practice writing fractions with denominators of 10 and 100 as decimals, which is what 4.NF.C.6 asks for. A common error is reading 0.3 and 0.03 as the same size, so watch for students who ignore the place value of each digit.
Student Worksheet
The class checks the water at Marden Pond. A tube is marked in tenths of a liter. A chart is marked in hundredths. Answer each item.
- One tube shows 3/10 liter. Write it as a decimal.
- Another tube shows 7/10 liter. Write it as a decimal.
- A chart reads 0.5 liter. Write it as a fraction with 10 on the bottom.
- Write 45/100 as a decimal.
- Write 0.09 as a fraction with 100 on the bottom.
- One tube has 0.4 liter. Another has 0.6 liter. Which one has more?
- Put these in order from least to most: 0.2, 0.5, 0.1.
- Find 0.6 on a line from 0 to 1. Is it closer to 0 or to 1?
- A tube shows 6/10 liter. Write it as hundredths and as a decimal.
- Tell how 0.30 and 0.3 can be the same amount. Use words.

Answer Key
- Answer: 0.3 liter. Three tenths is written 0.3, with the 3 in the tenths place.
- Answer: 0.7 liter. Seven tenths is written 0.7.
- Answer: 5/10 liter. The digit 5 is in the tenths place, so 0.5 equals 5/10.
- Answer: 0.45 liter. Forty-five hundredths is written 0.45, with 4 in the tenths place and 5 in the hundredths place.
- Answer: 9/100 liter. The 9 in 0.09 is in the hundredths place, so it equals 9/100.
- Answer: 0.6 liter. Six tenths is more than four tenths, so 0.6 is greater than 0.4.
- Answer: 0.1, 0.2, 0.5. One tenth is smallest and five tenths is largest.
- Answer: Closer to 1. Six tenths is past the middle mark of 0.5, so 0.6 sits closer to 1 than to 0.
- Answer: 60/100 and 0.60 (accept 0.6). Six tenths equals sixty hundredths, written 60/100 or 0.60.
- Answer: They are equal. 0.30 is thirty hundredths and 0.3 is three tenths, and thirty hundredths equals three tenths, so the amounts match.
Differentiation
Support
Give students a tenths grid and a hundredths grid so they can shade each reading before they write it. Model item 1 by shading 3 of 10 parts, then naming it "three tenths" and writing 0.3. Let students keep the grids for every item.
Extension
Ask students to place all of the tube readings from the worksheet on one number line from 0 to 1, then write a sentence saying which reading was the largest and which was the smallest.
ELL supports
Pre-teach "tenth" and "hundredth" with a place-value chart that labels each column. Provide a sentence frame for item 10: "0.30 and 0.3 are the same because ___ hundredths equals ___ tenths."
