Falconridge Station's Three Hoses: A Grade 1 Length Lesson
A 40-minute grade 1 lesson in which students order three fire hoses from shortest to longest and use a ribbon to compare two hoses that cannot be moved.
Common Core Math · Grade 1
Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.
Why water teaches this standard well
Students order three garden hoses, or three sticks used to mark puddle depth, from shortest to longest, then use one hose as a go-between to compare two others that were never placed side by side. Indirect comparison through a third object is the reasoning behind using a standard ruler later.
Materials tagged with this code are written to the full standard , and each carries a written note explaining the alignment. See how we review materials.
