3.OA.A.1 Interpret products of whole numbers

Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 x 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 x 7.

Why water teaches this standard well

Students interpret 5 x 7 as five sprinkler heads each spraying seven gallons, or five shelves of seven water bottles, connecting multiplication to a real array of water containers. Framing multiplication as equal groups of gallons previews the rate reasoning used for flow calculations in later grades.

Materials tagged with this code are written to the full standard , and each carries a written note explaining the alignment. See how we review materials.
