8.EE.A.3 Use scientific notation to estimate quantities

Use numbers expressed in the form of a single digit times an integer power of 10 to estimate very large or very small quantities, and to express how many times as much one is than the other.

Why water teaches this standard well

Students express Earth's total volume of fresh water or a large reservoir's gallon capacity in scientific notation, then compare how many times larger one quantity is than another. Writing enormous water volumes in scientific notation makes truly planetary-scale numbers manageable.

Materials tagged with this code are written to the full standard , and each carries a written note explaining the alignment. See how we review materials.
