MS-LS2-1 Analyze how resource availability affects populations

Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence for the effects of resource availability on organisms and populations of organisms in an ecosystem.

Clarification statement: Emphasis is on cause and effect relationships between resources and growth of individual organisms and the numbers of organisms in ecosystems during periods of abundant and scarce resources.

Why water teaches this standard well

Water is one of the resources whose abundance or scarcity most directly drives population change, making drought and streamflow data ideal for this standard. Students can analyze how a dry year shrinks a fish population or how restoring flow to a stream lets it recover.

Materials tagged with this code are written to the full standard , including its clarification statement , and each carries a written note explaining the alignment. See how we review materials.
