4.NBT.B.6 Divide multi-digit numbers and interpret remainders

Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Why water teaches this standard well

Students divide a month's total gallons used by four weeks to find an even weekly share, then decide what a leftover remainder means for the final week. Dividing a real water bill's usage into equal parts gives long division an immediate, checkable purpose.
