4.NBT.B.5 Multiply multi-digit whole numbers

Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Why water teaches this standard well

Students multiply a hose's gallons-per-minute flow rate by the number of minutes it ran to find the total gallons delivered, modeling the multiplication with an area diagram. This is the same multiplication structure behind every flow-times-time calculation an operator performs.
