HSS-ID.B.6 Fit functions to scatter plot data and assess residuals

Represent data on two quantitative variables on a scatter plot, and describe how the variables are related, including fitting a function to the data, using functions fitted to data to solve problems, and informally assessing the fit of a function by plotting and analyzing residuals.

Why water teaches this standard well

Students fit a regression line to years of rainfall paired with downstream streamflow data, the same USGS-style flood-frequency analysis real hydrologists perform, then plot residuals to check how well the line actually fits. This standard pairs naturally with real public streamflow data for a genuine research-style project.

Materials tagged with this code are written to the full standard , and each carries a written note explaining the alignment. See how we review materials.
