4.OA.A.3 Solve multistep word problems and interpret remainders

Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

Why water teaches this standard well

Students figure out how many delivery trucks are needed to haul a given number of water jugs when each truck holds a fixed load, and decide whether a leftover remainder means one more full trip is required. Interpreting the remainder in context is exactly the judgment call a water utility dispatcher makes every day.
